#FoodTalks: No more small change. Is £3 a fairer price for a pint of milk?

‘Follow the money’ is a familiar mantra. But when we do, it’s a case of small change for farmers, who typically only get a tiny fraction of the price you pay at the checkout for a bottle of milk or a block of cheese.

At a time of multiple crises, including inequality and cost of living, small change doesn’t cut it. We need big change – a fundamental overhaul of how farmers and producers are rewarded and valued. Using the example of the dairy sector, we will explore how to rebalance fairness in food value chains. What is the true cost of cheap milk? If we want ‘better’ dairy, surely we need to pay more…

How can we all support a transition to more ethical dairy – including a fair share for farmers?

Expert speakers include Vicki Hird, Head of Sustainable Farming at Sustain: the alliance for better food and farming, co-author of the recent report ‘Unpicking Food Prices: Where does your food pound go and why do farmers get so little?’, campaign strategist and author.

The evening will be chaired by Dan Crossley, Executive Director of the Food Ethics Council.


There will be a small charge of £5 (plus Eventbrite fee) to contribute towards the cost of the evening, including a drink. If that cost is likely to be prohibitive to you attending, please e-mail [email protected] for a free bursary place.
